Candlelighting
Bar and Bat Mitzvah receptions are a time for celebration! Quite often, the reception contains a Candle Lighting Ceremony to honor relatives and friends. Immediately following a dinner is a good time to perform this ceremony, although some people would prefer before dinner. Either way is correct, it's strictly personal preference.
A candle is lit after the Bar or Bat Mitzvah reads a brief statement or poem about the person being honored. As the honoree or honorees come up to assist with the lighting, the DJ plays a tune appropriate to that person, couple or group. For example, if Aunt Louise and Uncle Charlie came from New York, it would be appropriate to play the chorus of "New York, New York" as they approached the candles.
